My idea was that you would choose your subclass during the character creation. Assassins are from Kehjistan, and would be easy to put in the game since Kehjistan is one of the regions Monks, however, are from Ivgorod, Lore-wise, it would be really hard to put in. Game design-wise, I think it's a great idea. It also adds some amount of player choice, which is nice. I think sub-classes and/or prestige classes are some of the easier ways to implement a bunch of different character archetypes without bloating the game with a million different characters. If there was a way around the hurdle, though, I'd love to see it implemented. I just think it would be really hard to fit the world-building. Making a hybrid class system would be really hard lore-wise because it would imply that your character is simultaneously a member of a bunch of different, fairly insular ancestries that don't like to share secrets.Īgain, I really like the idea, and I think it's probably the best way to solve this kind of issue. In addition, a lot of the classes are more like ancestries than jobs: a Barbarian isn't just a bare-chested warrior who dual-wields, it's someone from an ancient ancestry with a particular creed and a particular history. Assassins are from Kehjistan, and would be easy to put in the game since Kehjistan is one of the regions Monks, however, are from Ivgorod, across the sea (albeit a really thin stretch of it) and just south of the Barbarian Dreadlands.
